日本と違って、漢字と読み方が全く一致しないという文字通りの「離れ」ワザは使えないので、発音だけ聞くとありがちな名前なのに、綴りが変わっている、というか、もしかして親がバカで正しい（一般的な）綴りがわからなかったんじゃないの？というような名前が主流。アシュリーだったら Ashleyと普通に綴らないでAshleeとか、Jordanだったらオーソドックスなんだけど、ひねってJaydenとか。その上、今まで聞いたこともないような名前も出てきた。ネヴェーアNeveahとか。これって「天国」を反対から綴ったものだとか。

アメリカンきらきらネームを探して少し歴史を遡ると、60年代に青春をヒッピーとして謳歌した世代は、子供にRainとか、Skyとか、自然にちなんだ名前をつけるのが流行った。これはネイティブ・インディアンにも通じるからかな。ちなみに有名人で言うと、リバー・フィニックスの親たちがそう。
